Social Network Purging Day

a collective excuse for spring cleaning stale social relationships

  • Are you sick of that friend tweeting about the iPad?
  • Are spam bots following you trying to help you lose weight?
  • Did you forget who u83rG33K_97@aol.com is?
  • Are you being facebook stalked by a creepy guy?
  • Are you being facebook stalked by 40 creepy guys?
  • Sick of updates from those old elementary school chums?
  • Had enough of that guy you met at a party last year?

If you’ve answered yes to one or more of these questions, Social Network Purging Day is for you.

We know you’ve wanted to defriend that person for ages. Join us as we collectively rip off the band-aid, and get all those dusty “relationships” out of our news feeds and inboxes for good on Saturday, March 20th.

Success!

Thanks for helping make the first annual Social Network Purging Day a booming success.

Personally, I’ve lightened up my networks all around. My facebook friends list dropped 20%, and I’m now at ease with my digital life. I hope things went just as well for everyone.

See you next year!

Instructions

facebook

This will most likely be the one that people need to deal with most. Clean out all those friends that aren’t really friends. You need to determine where to draw the line for yourself. Maybe it’s anyone you don’t have a personal face to face relationship with. Whatever it is, determine your cutoff criteria. Unfortunately, facebook doesn’t make it that easy to remove friends. If you need instructions they have a page about it here. Also, go through and delete applications, groups, fan pages, etc. that have become irrelevant.

twitter

The follower setup on twitter should make breaking connections a little more painless. Simply go through the list of people you’re following and unfollow people whose tweets aren’t really valuable to you. If you want to be really radical, you can unfollow everyone and start from scratch following the ones you really miss.

myspace

Delete it. Really, does anything worthwhile happen on MySpace? If you need to keep it around consider trimming up your friends here too. And maybe clean up your page, it looks awful (trust me).

other networks

Maybe you have a friendster, virb, or linkedin account that’s just collecting dust. Or a blog you haven’t posted to in 3 years. Give the internet a break, close this stuff.

contacts

Where else do you have contact lists that might be out of hand. Maybe your Google or phone contacts are unmanageable. Do you have instant messenger contacts you added in 1998? Pare them down to the ones you really need.

feeds

Do you use RSS or Atom feeds? How many of those are wasting valuable seconds of your life? Delete.

Really, it’s up to you. Clean what you will. But if you needed an excuse to do it, now you have one.
